Open Water Swimming
03 September 2010

On Sunday 6 September eight swimmers from the Royal Navy took part in the 2km Pier to Pier race.  The weather was grey and the sea was choppy but this didn't put any of the team off.  The race itself started off just before Clarence Pier and was very choppy.  It got even tougher as the swimmers rounded Castlefield, but once round the corner the tide was behind the swimmers giving them a great swim for the finish line just under South Parade Pier.

As usual the RN swimmers came away with medals.  Lt Cdr Witt and L/Cpl Bumby picked up 1st and 3rd in the 25-34 age group with Spike Buchan finishing 2nd in the 35-44 age group.  The ladies also competed well with OM Howells finishing 2nd in the 25-34 age group and Lt Buchan finishing 3rd.  Gail Henry finished 3rd in the 35-44 age group and Lou Mittens and Jeannie Roberts finished 3rd and 4th in the 55-64 age group.  All eight swimmers will be competing in the 3km Open Water Swim at the World Masters Games in October this year.

The Pier to Pier race was the final swim of the South East Region Grand Prix Series.  In total there have been 6 swims in the series and Lt Buchan won the 25-34 age group Championships.
